Vocational Nursing Program
Licensed vocational nurses (LVN) are health care professionals who offer basic patient care, typically under the supervision of a registered nurse or healthcare provider. LVN’s often work in long term care, clinics, physician’s offices and home health.
The Vocational Nursing Program at Trinity Valley Community college is a one-year, 46 credit hour curriculum leading to a certificate in Vocational Nursing. Graduates will be recommended to the Texas Board of Nursing to be approved to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) to qualify as a licensed vocational nurse. The program is offered in Palestine and Terrell
The Trinity Valley Community College Vocational Nursing Program’s mission is to prepare graduate vocational nurses who use critical thinking to provide safe, competent health care, who are ethically-guided and culturally sensitive patient advocates, who collaborate with the multidisciplinary health care team in an ever-changing environment, and who provide compassionate nursing care throughout the community in traditional and nontraditional settings.
Prerequisites for both locations:
- High school diploma or GED
- TSI complete in reading, writing and math
- HESI A2 Exam: Reading≥79%, Math≥75%, & Grammar≥75%
- TSI complete in reading, writing and math
- COURSES: BIOL 2404 or PSYC 2314 (BIOL 2401 & 2402 together, may be substituted for BIOL 2404)
- Admission Testing: TSI / HESI
Palestine VN Program
- Application Dates: October 15th - December 1st
- What do I need to apply?
- Apply to TVCC
- Upon acceptance to TVCC, complete the Health Occupations application online
- Submit official transcripts of courses taken in the fall to the registrar’s office by December 1st
- TSI and HESI A2 testing documentation
Terrell VN Program
- Application Dates: April 1st - August 15th
- What do I need to apply?
- Apply to TVCC
- Upon acceptance to TVCC, complete the Health Occupations application online
- Submit official transcripts to the HSC Assistant Campus Director by September 1
- TSI and HESI A2 testing documentation
All applicants who have submitted a completed application with required documentation will be considered for priority selection according to the point system provided. Maximum points for program 50.
- Cumulative GPA (all colleges) ≥3.5 (4 points) ≥3.0 (2 points)
- Qualifying HESI A2 Reading ≥90 (8 points) ≥80 (4points)
- Qualifying HESI A2 Grammar ≥90 (8 points) ≥80 (4points)
- Highest A&P I or BIOL 2404 Grade A (8 points) B (4 points)
- Highest A&P II Grade A (8 points) B (4 points)
- Grade for 1st A&P I (W’s count as 1st attempt) A (4 points)
- Completion of general education courses with C or better: 2 VN courses (1 point each)
- Credit Hours at TVCC ≥15 hours (4 points)
- Completion of TVCC PCT, SGT, EMT, or Clinical Medical Assisting (4 points)
How long is the program?
The Vocational Nursing Program of Trinity Valley Community College is a one-year, 46 credit hour curriculum leading to a certificate in Vocational Nursing.
How much does the program cost?
Palestine- In-district about $8300; Out-of-district about $11,500
Terrell - In-district about $7900; Out-of-district about $11,100
What is the program schedule?
The Vocational Nursing Program in Palestine begins each August. The Vocational Nursing Program in Terrell begins each January. Classes are conducted Monday through Friday approximately six – eight hours per day. Some clinicals may be 12 hours.
How many students are accepted into the program?
A maximum of 40 students are accepted in Palestine.
A maximum of 24 students are accepted in Terrell.
What are the required orientation dates I need to schedule around?
The Palestine Class will have an orientation in late April.
The Terrell Class will have an orientation in early December.
Where will I do clinicals in the VN program?
Clinical experiences for the Palestine program are offered in Palestine and Athens.
Clinical rotations for the Terrell program are located in Terrell, Forney, Kaufman, or Athens.
If I got an email in January about getting my fingerprints for the FBI background check for the Board of Nursing, can I wait until after I get selected to the nursing program to get them done?
No, you should get your fingerprints done as soon as possible as the approval process can take several months, especially in there are an hits in your background.
When will selections be done for the VN program?
All qualified applicants will be sent an email regarding their acceptance status by end of March for the Palestine Program and by October 15th for the Terrell Program.
