Surgical Tech
Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.
The Surgical Technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room or environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
The Trinity Valley Community College Surgical Technology Program’s mission is to prepare safe, competent graduates who will functions as surgical technologists in operating rooms.
- Application Dates: October 15th - December 1st
- What do I need to apply?
- Apply to TVCC
- Upon acceptance to TVCC, complete the Health Occupations application online
- Submit official transcripts to the registrar’s office by December 1st
- Submit an unofficial updated fall transcript to the HSC Assistant Campus Director by January 31st
- TSI and HESI A2 testing documentation
- Prerequisites
- High school diploma or GED
- TSI complete
- HESI A2 Exam: Reading =79%, Math =75%, & Grammar =75%
- For application: Must complete at least one of the following general ed courses at the time of application: BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, ENGL 1301, MDCA 1313, and PSYC 2314
- Admission Testing: TSI and HESI A2
All applicants who have submitted a completed application with the required documentation will be considered for priority selection according to the point system provided. Maximum points for program 65.
- Prerequisite Courses: BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, ENGL 1301, MDCA 1313, PSYC 2314 (1 point each)
- AAS Courses: BCIS 1305, PSYC 2301, BIOL 2420, PSYC 1301 & Language/Philosophy/Culture or Creative Arts (1 point each)
- Cumulative GPA (all colleges) =3.5 (4 points) =3.0 (2 points)
- Qualifying HESI A2 Reading =90 (8 points) =80 (4points)
- Qualifying HESI A2 Grammar =90 (8 points) =80 (4points)
- Highest A&P I Grade A (8 points) B (4 points)
- Highest A&P II Grade A (8 points) B (4 points)
- Highest Microbiology Grade A (8 points) B (4 points)
- Grade for 1st A&P I (W’s count as 1st attempt) A (4 points)
- Completion of general education courses with C or better
- Credit Hours at TVCC =15 hours (4 points)
- Completion of TVCC PCT, EMT, or Medical Assisting (4 points)
The Trinity Valley Community College Surgical Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology. Surgical technology program graduates are eligible to take the National Certifying Examination for Surgical Technologists to become CSTs.

How long is the program?
Surgical Technology classes begin each fall at the Health Science Center in Terrell, and last nine months.
How much does the program cost?
In-district about $7,000, Out-of-district about $12,000.
What is the program schedule?
- Fall Semester – First seven weeks T/W/Th 8am-3:30pm, Last nine weeks Wednesdays 8am-3:30pm, M/T or Th/F 7am-3pm
- Spring Semester – Class Monday 8am-5pm, Clinical Tue-Fri 7am-3pm
