For the 17th time in the program’s history, Trinity Valley Community College Student Government Association was named Chapter of Year at the Texas Junior College Student Government Association Annual Convention held April 25 – 28 in Austin.
“I am beyond proud of this group of students,” TVCC – Athens SGA Advisor and Director of Recruitment and Admissions Courtney Skiles shared. “They worked so hard, held it down, and proved to everyone what we already knew that they are the best! I love this group of leaders dearly and am bursting with pride!”
TVCC is a member of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association Region 3, which is comprised of community colleges including TVCC, Tyler Junior College, Texarkana College, Panola College, Paris Junior College, Navarro College and more. TJCSGA was awarded Region of the Year. This is the first time for TJCSGA Region 3 to be recognized for this award in over ten years. TVCC – Athens student and SGA House Division Delegate Heidi Davis served on the committee that created the competition entry for Region of the Year submission.
“We are proud of her hard work and dedication to this project,” Skiles commented.
TVCC newest chapter of SGA located on the TVCC- Terrell Chapter was recognized by the state executive board as ‘Most Outstanding Delegation.’ This is an award selected by the state executive board for chapters that go above and beyond, are professional, and conduct themselves to the highest level during the conference. TVCC has not won this award in the past 10 years.
“This is major TVCC history as we have never had more than one chapter in attendance and for them to receive this recognition is incredible,” Skiles noted. “We received so many compliments about how amazing our Terrell Chapter was, and this award was very much deserved. We are so proud of them!”
Not only did the Chapters receive awards, but individual students and advisors were recognized during the convention. Davis was elected as President of the TJCSGA regional executive board. Skiles concluded her term as Advisor Elect for the state executive board and will serve as Advisor to the State for the 2024-2025 term. TVCC – Athens President Genesis Forman concluded her term as State President for 2023-2024. TVCC – Terrell SGA Advisor Chris Goolsby was elected as Advisor Elect for the regional executive board. TVCC – Terrell Vice President Sarah Eastep was elected Editor of the Bulletin for the regional executive board.
“Our SGA students were incredible,” Skiles shared. “They truly shine and represent TVCC so well. We are lucky to have them as ambassadors and leaders for community college students across Texas.”
The Texas Junior College Student Government Association is the only student-maintained organization in the state that works to promote the cause of community college students at the local, regional, state and national level. We are composed of over 72 member colleges across the state. The member colleges are divided into six regional districts drawn at the county level. These regions meet at fall and annual conventions to coordinate activities and to help plan the state convention.
